Making Granola

March 13, 2008

I have decided that too much of my grocery budget gets spent on breakfast. I usually buy cereal using sales and coupons. But between my three kids and husband we seem to go through a lot of it. So I am trying to find ways to cut down the amount I spend on cereal.
One of the things we all like is granola. We like it with milk, mixed with yogurt, and just plain for a snack. But granola is really expensive to buy. It is also usually very sweet. So I have been experimenting with homemade granola recipes. I have been surprised by the range of recipes I have found. I have had fun experimenting with some of the ingredients that I use. When I make my own I can also control the amount of sugar.
I can also vary the recipes and ingredients so we do not get tired of one kind. I can also make a large batch which will last a while. The thing I have noticed it that my family likes the ones with nuts, coconuts, etc. in it. I think by the time I add all those things in it may not be cheaper. I will save money if I make the plain kinds but I am not sure I do when I add all the extras.
Here are a few of the recipes I have tried.
I know it is healthier to make my own but is it really cheaper? What do you think?

We enjoy both homemade granola and store bought cereals (with coupons). I do think a basic homemade granola is cheaper because it is much more filling and very nutritious. My husband prefers it over store bought so I try to keep some made for him:)You can see my recipe here http://joyfulnine.blogspot.com/2008/02/our-granola-recipe.html

I love making my own granola, too! Yes, I think it is cheaper to make my own, especially when I get the ingredients in bulk.
Blessings,
Michele :)
