Last week I tried a new recipe for 100% whole wheat bread. It looked like a good recipe but it was a little different than other recipes that I have made. I decided to give it a try. I wish I hadn’t made it, it was terrible. It was heavy and flat, kind of like a brick. It was edible but not good.
I had two loaves of it to use up. We ate some of it the first day with soup for dinner, but I knew that my family really did not want it again. I did not want to throw it out. I hated to waste all the ingredients.
My sister had told me about making homemade croutons. She really likes them and I thought maybe that would be a good use of my “bad” bread.
This is not an exact recipe but it is a basic idea.
I cut the bread into cubes. I then melted about 1/4 cup of butter and added in some herbs. There really is not recipe for this, just add what you like. I used the spices my sister suggested which were onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, and kosher salt. I just sprinkled in some of each. I tossed the bread cubes in the melted butter and spices until they were well coated. I spread them out on a cookie sheet and baked them at 350 degrees for about 14 minutes. This may take a different amount of time in other ovens.
These will not get as crispy as store bought croutons. I stored them in an airtight container for about 1 week. They will probably last long then this though.

Yummy! Great job find a creative use for your otherwise wasted bread. I’ve never tried croutons with whole wheat bread…. I’ll have to give it a try next time my bread doesn’t turn out.
