Magic Cake Bars

by Lynn

This recipe is so good and so easy. It is similar to the magic cookie bars or seven layer bars that many of us have made for years, but this version uses a cake mix for the base. I made this for our last staff lunch and everyone loved them.

This is a great dessert to make when you are in a hurry. This is also one of those desserts that I love because I usually have all the ingredients in my pantry.

You can change this up a little by using different chips or leaving out the coconut or nuts. You really just follow the basic idea of it. I think my family actually likes this version better than the one with graham cracker crumbs that I make.

Oh these look really yummy. I think these are basically the same thing my mother used to call “Seven Layer Bars”.

Yum! That sounds like something my dad likes that we call Hello Dolly’s, except we don’t put butterscotch in them. I am going to have to try this recipe because butterscotch is my weakness!

Oops! When I said these were my favorite last night, I meant with the graham cracker crumbs. Just saw the picture and went with it. :) But, this version does look delicious!

I just made these, with two additions — I added 1/2 cup white chocolate chips because I had them laying around, and I sprinkled the bars lightly (very lightly!!) with flake sea salt when they came out of the oven. Oh and I used chopped hazelnuts instead of pevans, because I also had them on hand. Turned out terrific…college student son and his pals loved them! I think these are better than with the graham cracker base. Thanks!!

I made these delicious bars and wrote about them here. I loved the cake batter mix crust! I’m especially excited as one of the kids in my daughter’s church group is allergic to eggs. It’s always nice to be able to have a dessert that he can eat too. Thank you for posting this recipe!
