I think we all know we should be eating more vegetables. At least I know my family needs to eat more of them. But they get boring after awhile. We get tired of the same plain vegetables over and over. Because of this I am always trying to find more interesting ways to serve them. So, when I saw this recipe in an Everyday Food magazine I knew I wanted to give it a try.
Not only did this help make broccoli interesting, it goes great with Asian style food. Many times I serve something that has an Asian sauce or style to it and I have trouble coming up with a side dish or vegetable to serve with it. Now I can turn to this recipe.

Sorry for the picture, broccoli just does not photograph well.
Asian Style Broccoli with Oyster Sauce
- 3 tablespoons oyster sauce,( Most oyster sauce has gluten in it, but I found some GF at an Asian store)
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce ( I used a GF one)
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- Pinch of sugar
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 head broccoli (1 1/2 pounds), cut into florets
In a small bowl, whisk together oyster sauce, soy sauce, cornstarch, sugar, and 1 tablespoon water.
In a large skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium-high. Add garlic and broccoli. Cook, stirring occasionally, until broccoli is bright green, about 3 minutes. Add 1/2 cup water, cover, and cook until broccoli is tender but still has a little crunch, which took about 2 – 2 1/2 minutes. Add oyster sauce mixture; cook until thickened, about 1 minute more. Serve and enjoy!

Sounds lovely! I’ve never used oyster sauce, but I’m sure its a great addition =D.
Pshaw! Your broccoli looks wonderful–I can taste it right now! I think this is a fabulous idea–I’m always looking for ways to perk up veggies as well. This is my favorite thing to do with green beans, if you’re interested: http://reciperhapsody.wordpress.com/2010/01/02/italian-green-beans/ and something similar with peas: http://reciperhapsody.wordpress.com/2009/04/04/marissas-good-peas/. Thanks for this great recipe!
@Veronica M., Thanks! Your green beans look great. I had never thought to try them that way. It is a great idea.
My kids love broccoli with cheese sauce but that gets OLD – they (well really me but they are good sports) love Asian food I can’t wait to try this out.
I’ve done this before (add beef for a beef and broccoli dinner!) It’s pretty much the only reason I keep Oyster Sauce! Very good when we are craving Chinese!
