Crispy Roasted French Fries

I love potatoes. Seriously, I love to just eat a baked potato for dinner. I don’t think I have ever had a potato dish that I did not like. Maybe my love of potatoes has something to do with growing up in the northwest. That part of the country is potato country after all.

Any guesses on what my favorite way to eat potatoes is? French fries, yes, french fries. Who doesn’t love french fries? Yes, I know french fries are not the healthiest way to eat potatoes, but they are so good.

I love french fries that are true french fries. The ones that have been fried.  However, they are just not very practical to make at home very often. So, I have found different ways of cooking potatoes to get a similar result. Today, I am sharing one of my favorite versions.

What I love about this recipe is that you can easily get a result very close to the fried version by using the oven. No, they are not exactly the same as the deep fried ones, but they are very good and pretty close to the real thing. Not only that, these are so easy to make.

  1. I too share your love of potatoes!!!! I like to make oven roasted fries regularly. I often add garlic powder, onion powder and a little smoked paprika along with the Kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper to liven things up a bit.

  2. Those look delicious! I’ve made basic oven-roasted potatoes before, but I bet the extra oil in your recipe does make good french fries. I will try them soon.

  3. this is how i make them for my BF all the time. I also add oregano and some garlic powder to them for a little something extra. i love potatoes :)

  4. This was one of my childhood favorites that my mom use to always make. I didn’t even know fries could be purchased in the frozen section until I moved out of the house [funny right??] Yum yum yum!! Thanks for reminding me. I’ll have to make some for my twins tomorrow.

  5. I am a big potato fan as well. We went out to dinner this week and I had a platter with three varieties of shrimp. It was delicious, but my favorite part of the meal was my baked potato!!! Love your post. ~

  6. I’m so glad I saw your post yesterday. As luck would have it last night I started to make “fish sticks and fries” to discover I had no frozen french fries! I did however have a few small potatoes so made these. My hubby LOVED them, they were very tasty! Thanks!

Lynn – Do you have any suggestions for preparing these ahead of time and freezing them? We’ve tried it and they are very mushy upon defrosting and never seem to crisp up in the oven. Any suggestions would be great.

    • @Michelle K, I am not sure I am much help here. I have not had great luck freezing potatoes, unless they were like a pot. casserole that had lots of butter and cheese in them. Other wise I have had they same issue as you. They get really mushy and not a very good texture. I am not sure how to fix it, but I hope to. If I figure it out, I will be sure to post on it. :)

    • @Michelle K, I asked about this a few years ago when I was taking a basic cooking class at our community college. To freeze French fries, blanch them in hot oil first and then freeze them. You can then bake them when you are ready to cook them. I have had great intentions of trying this, but every time I cut up the fries, we end up using them right away 😉 I also wanted to try blanching them in hot water first instead of oil, but have the same problem I previously mentioned.

  9. I’m trying these tonight! Do you spread them out on a cookie sheet or bake them in a dish like the picture? I figured the dish was for serving, but the instructions didn’t say either way. I’m going to put them on a cookie sheet, but I would love to hear what you do. Thanks. :)

  10. We have baked fries at least once a week, so this a post after my own heart! I really love how flexible they are, we can have just plain salt and pepper or we can add smoked paprika and cayenne. :)

These are the greatest way to have potatoes! I make these ALL the time now. I like how easy they are to make instead of frying them over the stove.

  12. I love me some fries! Recently though, I’ve been making them by tossing them in a mixture of olive oil and garlic salt, baking them til they are crispy and then sprinkling on parmesan cheese and parsley. SO GOOD!
