What Is It Wednesday- Item Five

My husband and I went grocery shopping together last week and one of the stores that we went to was Whole Foods. They had several items on sale that I wanted to pick up, but I also wanted to find some new things to try for my What Is It Wednesday posts.

I knew Whole Foods would be a great place to look for some new and unusual foods. I also knew my husband would be helpful in finding some new things to try, because he is much more adventurous than I am when it comes to food.

We decided to look around the produce section to see if there was anything interesting. My husband found the item pictured above and decided he wanted to give it a try.

Here it is next to an apple. This will give you a better idea of what size it is.

And here is what the inside of it looks like?

Do you know what it is?

  5. Hmm… I was thinking Pumelo like Ema, but it does seem to be too small. I don’t think it’s a grapefruit, maybe some other sort of Asian citrus?

  6. That’s a marsh grapefruit. Needs lots of sugar sprinkled on it, really good grilled too!

  7. my guess was pummelo as well until I saw it sliced. Grapefruit for sure! And I agree- red is best!

  8. I think it’s a cocktail grapefruit – quite a bit smaller than your average grapefruit, and supposedly a lot sweeter (maybe even as sweet as ruby red?) Hope you like it!

  22. I’m no good at this, but I do believe it’s too yellow to be a grapefruit, as they tend to be more orangey. So, I’ll go with some sort of specialty grapefruit. :)

  23. Elizabeth Hults says:

    Cara Cara orange.

  24. It looks like a grapefruit, but I don’t know what type. We have started to brulee our grapefruit. Sprikle course sugar on top and blow torch it like you would creme brulee. Yummy!
