Slow Cooker Hot Fudge Sundae Cake {Cooking Through My Collection}

Hot Fudge Sundae Cake is an old fashioned type dessert that goes by many names. I have heard it called chocolate cobbler, chocolate pudding cake, and several other names. But no matter what they are called, I have yet to try one that we did not like.

How can a chocolate cake served with a warm pudding type sauce be bad?!

One of the best things about hot fudge cakes is that they are a simple and easy dessert to make using everyday ingredients.

I recently picked up the cookbook Betty Crocker’s Slow Cooker Cookbook for a dollar at a used book sale. The cookbook is full of simple crock pot recipes and I already marked a few that I want to try. I think this cookbook will get a lot of use because I am always looking for new crock pot recipes and ideas.

One of the recipes that immediately caught my eye was the slow cooker hot fudge sundae cake. Since we love anything chocolate in our house, I was pretty sure this one would be a hit.

And it was. Warm right out of the crock pot with ice cream on top was delicious. This was such an easy dessert and it was so good!

If any of you own the Betty Crocker’s Slow Cooker Cookbook I would love to hear your thoughts on it.

The version I am sharing today is the regular version, but I will be sharing the version I adapted to be gluten free later this week in my allergy section.

  1. This is a must have!! YUM!

  2. In the crockpot now for the kids’ snack after their first day of school! Thanks!

  3. Does this make the cake and has sauce as well?

    • Yes, the cake part is the top and the sauce is on the bottom after it cooks. So when you scoop it up you will have both and can kind of pour or serve the sauce on top.

  4. I have this book. The black beans are awesome (I tweak them a bit), beefstew w/ herb dumplings…etc

  5. Half milk? Is that a half a cup of milk? Thanks

  6. how will i know when this is done? what do i look for… like as to whether 2 hours or 1 & a half? TY :) in crockpot now! ::))

    • The top should look cake like, but you can’t test it like you would a cake since there is pudding at the bottom. If the top looks like a cake that is done, then it should be fine. You could cut into it slightly to make sure if you want to. I hope you enjoy it!

  7. Looks delicious! I think my slow cooker is approximately a 6 qt… would I have to double the recipe (that’s a lot of cake!) or would it cook ok if I just use the same recipe but would be thinner? Thanks!

  8. What is baking cocoa?

  9. I’ve used this exact recipe in the oven for more than 30 YEARS…my mom used to make it too. I found with my 1 yr old 3 quart slowcooker it only took 1 hr 15 minutes. Good thing I thought to check it when I did because it was perfectly done at that point. If I’d had walnuts in the house I would have toasted half a cup and added them to the batter. Another nice thing to do is to add a teaspoon or two of instant coffee or instant espresso to the cake batter.

  10. Do you think you could double the recipe in a larger crockpot? I’m making dessert for a bigger group this week and was thinking of making this.

  11. Made this this weekend while we were camping. It was nice to go off and do our trick or treating after dinner and know that dessert was waiting for us! I used my all purpose gluten-free flour and it turned out fabulous! Nobody could tell and it was ok for my husband to have it. It was a great dessert to have on a chilly night around the fire! Thanks for this. Just wish it made more. Maybe two crocks next time!

  12. I was disappointed in how mine turned out. It was very dry. I cooked it just under two hours. It was also not quite chocolatey and sweet enough. But the main thing it was missing was the mushy chocolate part that is like pudding. I wonder what I did wrong.

    • Sorry it did not turn out for you. It sounds like it may have overcooked. Does your crock pot usually cook hot/fast that you have noticed?
