Cooking with Kids, Making Pies, and a Menu Plan {April 28th-May 4th}

We ran out of homemade granola the other day and my daughter said, “Mom I think I will make some more homemade granola this weekend.” And I said something like, “Yes, that would be very nice of you.”

In my mind though I was really thinking something like, “Yes, all those years of working with you in the kitchen, even when you did not want to, have finally paid off. ” Instead of saying mom you need to buy granola, she said mom we need to make some granola.

Teaching your kids to cook is worth it. Not because it helps you, although that is an added bonus, but because it helps them. It is a skill that will last them a lifetime. I doubt a child will ever look back and say I wish my mom had never taught me to cook. Instead they may wonder why you did not teach them to cook.

And I don’t say that in a way to make you feel guilty. I say it to encourage you to keep at it. Those days where you struggle and don’t think you have the time, or the patience, to work in the kitchen with your kids. Those days are worth it. They are worth the extra time it takes to put dinner on the table.

Or when you have a day where the last thing you want to do is make a pie with your daughter when your to do list is a mile long, but she wants to, so you stop and spend the afternoon making pie with her. Yes, that was my day yesterday. And as tempted as I was to say, no, I have other things to do, I stepped back and realized I needed to say yes.

How could I say no to working with her on making pies? She wanted to make pies. My to do list could wait. I had to say yes. And in the end I am so glad I said yes, because not only did we end up with two delicious pies, we also made some memories.

You won’t regret spending time with your kids in the kitchen this week.

  1. Lynn, I love this post! I have two daughters (ages 25 and 20). One lives two hours away – in college. The other has an apartment with a roommate and works full-time. My own mom didn’t cook much with me. I learned pretty much everything from trial and error and lots of calls to my mom and my mother-in-law. But, I had no fear and now successfully have mastered canning, baking homemade bread, cakes, you name it. My own two girls do lots of cooking! You are right that sometimes we do things as moms because we need to, even though we might have a thousand other things to do at that moment. That seems to ring true for me these days as my own daughters want to cook or, the thing now seems to be, sewing (which I would NEVER have expected!). Sometimes I think we have to be ready to teach when they are ready to learn. I started my blog for the main reason that my own daughters can pull up pretty much anything we’ve eaten at home and recreate it in their own kitchens. They thought it was a litlte corny at first but both use my blog regularly. One of them even shares the site with friends. The other thing these big girls do is take pictures of their food. I love that and it’s a regular thing for me to get texts at supper that are pics of things like homemade stirfry, meat, potatoes, and steamed broccoli (another surprise when both girls who live two hours apart made steamed broccoli during the same week), homemade biscuits, even loaves of homemade bread! Talk about a proud momma! While 90% of the people I know are making stuff from a box and eating out, my two children are cooking. It doesn’t get much better than that!   2. Lynn, I just saw the importance of teaching my children to cook this past weekend. My youngest daughter invited my Husband and I over to her boyfriend’s house for dinner. What greeted us was not some fast food….but a delicious, homemade Chicken Parmesan! I was so proud! I have spent a lifetime in the kitchen with my children and that dinner made me remember every one of those moments.
