This old fashioned apple custard is a simple, yet delicious dessert.
I love simple old fashioned recipes like our grandmothers and great grandmothers used to make. The kind of recipes that use simple and basic ingredients that we always have on hand. The kind of recipes that are often forgotten.
I named this recipe old fashioned apple custard, because it is inspired by older recipes that I had seen for apple custard pie. They were all about the same and were basically a custard pie with apples. I decided to take that basic idea and turn into more of an apple custard or crustless apple custard pie.
What I ended up with was a dish my family loved! This is simple, yet delicious. And it is perfect for fall.
Old Fashioned Apple Custard
- 3 cups peeled and sliced apples
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1 1/3 cups sugar
- 4 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons all purpose flour or gluten free flour blend
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
- 1/4 cup white sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup all purpose flour or gluten free flour blend
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 3 tablespoons butter, softened
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
- To make apple mixture: Melt butter in cast iron skillet or oven proof skillet. Add apples, 1/2 cup sugar, and cinnamon. Cook for 3-4 minutes or until apples are slightly tender. Set aside.
- For custard: In a bowl whisk together all custard ingredients until smooth. Pour into skillet over apple mixture.
- Bake for 30 minutes.
- While custard is baking make the topping by combining the sugars, flour, and cinnamon in a bowl. Cut in butter until mixture is crumbly. After custard has baked for 30 minutes sprinkle with topping mixture and bake 18-20 more minutes are until apples are completely tender and custard is set.
- Serve warm.
