Five Quick Tips for Eating Gluten Free On Vacation

It is the second week of May which means that the start of summer and summer vacations are only a few short weeks away.

Gluten free, and food allergies in general, can be challenging when on vacation, but it can be done. Today I wanted to share a few quick tips for staying gluten free while traveling or on vacation.

Plan Ahead

Planning ahead is one of the most important things you can do to make gluten free easier when traveling. Take the time to research restaurants in the area that you are going that are gluten free friendly. There are several chain type restaurants that are great when it comes to gluten free and I always research the area we are going ahead of time to see if any are in the area. Often times small and local restaurants also offer gluten free options.

Spending some time online researching your options will save you a ton of time and will keep you safe when it comes to gluten free eating.

Pack Food

Planning ahead and taking food with you helps insure that you always have something safe that you can eat. This is a little more challenging when traveling by airplane, because you are limited to what you can take, but I always try to take at least some things with me even when traveling by air.

If you are traveling by car it is easy to take a cooler full of food, even if it is just a small cooler. I love to pack things like yogurt, cheese sticks, lunch meat, gluten free tortillas for wraps, and fruit in the cooler.

This is also a good time to splurge on gluten free prepackaged things you might not buy everyday. Udi’s muffins and cookies, gluten free crackers, small prepackaged containers of fruit and applesauce are great for traveling. Jerky, granola, granola bars, and trail mix also work well.

Find a Store Near Where You Are Staying

Often times when on vacation you are in a hurry to get from one place to the next, but when it comes to a gluten free vacation be sure to take the time to find a store in the area to restock your cooler and food. Even stores in small towns now often carry at least some gluten free products. Today with smart phones and tablets it is so easy to do a quick search to find somewhere to pick up a few gluten free food items.

Don’t Be Afraid To Ask Questions

This applies to gluten free eating in general, but is extra important when traveling and on vacation. No one wants to spend their time away being sick from cross contamination. So don’t be afraid to ask questions at restaurants or at a relative’s house. Don’t be shy about asking specific questions about what is in something or how it was prepared. It is not worth getting sick.

Relax and Have Fun

This is a pretty basic one, but sometimes it can be easy to be so stressed about food that you don’t enjoy yourself. We all want to stay safe, but we also want enjoy our time away. If you plan ahead and ask questions it will make it much easier to relax and have fun when you are actually on vacation. We need to be careful what we eat, but we don’t want to stress too much about it or it can easily ruin a vacation.
