I have not participated in a Show and Tell Friday for awhile, so I wanted to do so today.

Last October I posted about going to Texas to pick up a few pieces of furniture that were my husbands grandparents. I posted about the tables that we got, that by the way are still sitting in my garage because I can’t decided quite what I want to do with them.

Today though I thought I would post about the dressers we got from his grandparents. I love old dressers and chests of drawers. If you can find them in good condition they are so much better then modern ones. They have character and I like that. It is hard to find ones though that are in good condition. I was so glad to find that these ones are. They have some wear, actually lots of wear, but they are still sturdy and have been well taken care of.

I will say though that people had a lot less clothes 75-100 years ago. Although these dressers are pretty they do not hold enough stuff in my opinion. The drawers are very shallow compared to what we are used to today. Also the depth and width are not very big. I ended up not putting any of my husbands clothes in these. I could only fit 4 pairs of pants in each drawer and his shirts got all scrunched up in them. So, I decided these would work for my stuff for now. I love the look so it is worth having a little less space.

The mirror on this one is in especially good shape for the age. I am glad because I love the mirror on it. It makes it look a lot nicer.

I really like the look of stoneware style dishes. I especially like Fiestaware, I have for a long time. I just like the look. I love all the colors and options you can do by mixing and matching them.

I own a lot of different stoneware style pieces, most of which are inexpensive pieces that I have picked up here and there over the years. Last week though I found a group of used Fiestaware for a really good price. I was thrilled. I really do not think the lady knew what she had. I found them for a lot more online than I paid.

Now, these would not have been my first choice for Fiestaware. I like the dark colors since they match more with my house and style. But these were a great deal for what they were so I decided to buy them.

All of these colors are retired from what I can tell. I think they must be about twenty years old but I am just guessing on that. So, here is what I got.

I love it. I love the extras I was able to get like the serving bowls, pitcher, and gravy boat. I don’t plan on using these for everyday dishes. I prefer plain dishes, like white or ivory, for my main set. However, this will give me plenty of dishes for when we have company. My kids like having the option of eating off the colored dishes.

However, my son will not eat off a pink plate, he says a boy should not eat on something pink. Maybe, I should try serving him chocolate cake on a pink plate. He might just eat that off of a pink dish. My girls though love all the colors. I think the extra serving pieces will also get a lot of use.

I displayed some of them in my hutch that is in my dinning room. I like the color it added to the room. One of the things I like about Fiestaware is that you can keep adding to the set. I look forward to doing that over time. I doubt I will find as good of a deal as I did this time though.

For more ideas see Antique Thingies Thursday ( I know this post is probably not quite antique maybe more vintage ) and Show and Tell Friday.

I love old jars and bottles. I have been collecting them for awhile. I have a few of my favorite ones on display in my kitchen. I picked a few out to show you today. I have collected most of the ones I have at garage sales, but a few have been given to me by friends.

The little green Squirt pop bottle is my favorite of my whole collection. I love it. My mom had it for years and then she gave it to me. Part of why of love it so much is because it is my dad’s favorite pop. It is supposed to be used as a salt shaker, but it is to “nice” to be used for that. I just keep it on display.

I like what it says on the back, be healthy, be happy, drink squirt. I am not sure pop should be considered healthy but maybe years ago it was.

We bought this piece of furniture several years ago at an antique store. Both my husband and I really like it. It was used as a wardrobe. I am guessing it was used in an entryway of a house for coats and outerwear. It still has the original bar and hangers attached inside.

We wanted it to be more functional so we put shelves in it. We put these in it, in a way that does not harm the piece. It is a free standing shelf unit that can come in and out. We used this piece for several years in our bedroom to store clothes in instead of a dresser.

We recently moved some furniture and kitchen items around. We decided to give this piece a new use.

I do not have a very big kitchen and do not have much storage space. This piece now holds a lot of my canned goods and other items. It is not in my kitchen but it still works great for these items. I was able to fit a lot into it. This allowed me to have more room in my kitchen for storage. I love my new use for this piece.

See the original rod is still in place.

Last week my husband and I went to Texas to pick up some of his grandparents furniture that no one else wanted. We knew that some of it was not in the best condition, but my husband wanted it anyway. We were able to get two small antique dressers that are in pretty good shape. I will try to post pictures of those next week.

We also got these tables.

There is one coffee table and two end tables. I really do not know how old they are. I am guessing from the 50′s or 60′s but they might be newer than that. They are still pretty sturdy but they have been used a lot. They have quite a few marks and are missing a few decorative pieces from the sides.

I do not like to paint antiques. In fact I don’t paint old furniture. We like the wood to show. We usually like the wear that old furniture shows. The only old piece of furniture that I have painted was one that had already been painted. But I am actually thinking of painting these. My husband really wants to use them and I do like them, but not like they are. I am thinking they would be much cuter and match my house better if they were black. I just can’t decide. Part of me says paint them, you will love them. But the other part says don’t paint them, you will regret it.

I figure they may be worth painting because they are not in that great of shape, but than I think I may regret it. What do you all think? Paint or no paint?

I have had these fruit prints for a long time. They came from my grandmother stuff but I do not remember how or when I got them. But I know they were hers. I am guessing they are over thirty years old but I am not exactly sure.

I have always liked them but have never been sure exactly what to do with them. I had the prints put away in a box in a closet. I was recently cleaning out closets and came across them again. I decided it was time to figure out what I wanted to do with them. I decided to frame them but I did not want to spend a lot of money.

I took them into Hobby Lobby (a craft type store in our area) to see what I could do with them. Having them framed was more than I wanted to spend but I thought I could have the mats cut and than buy the frames separate. This would save quite a bit of money. Usually when I have things framed I recommend doing it right. I have had several things framed at Hobby Lobby and Micheal’s that fell apart or sagged in the frame within a year or two. If it is a really nice handiwork type piece I highly recommend using a speciality frame shop. But for these prints I did not think spending a lot of money was worth it.

I found some black frames that I really liked and I had black mats cut to match. I thought it matched with my other stuff well and was a nice clean look. I also thought the black made the color of the fruit stand out better.

So here are the fruit prints from my grandmother framed and hanging in my kitchen dining area. Sorry for the glare on the glass.
