Home-Ec 101 Review and Giveaway

I have been looking for a good book to use for teaching my kids the basics of keeping a home.

Yes, they help me often around the house and in the kitchen, but since we home school I have been looking for something more book or curriculum like to use with them.

I was looking for something they could read, learn from, and refer back to in the future. So, when I was contacted a few weeks ago about reviewing the book Home-Ec 101 by Heather Solos, I was very excited.

Heather is the blogger behind the website Home Ec 101 and I love the concept of what she does. She teaches the basics of housekeeping. She teaches Home-Ec to you, which is a skill many people are lacking today.

I received the book last week and I love this book, but my 13 year old loves it even more.

She found it the day it arrived in the mail and started reading it right away. She spent the next few days telling me all the things she had learned from it. In fact she has pretty much claimed the book as her own.

And this was all her choice. I had planned on reading and reviewing it, and have her read it sometime in the future, but she had other plans. She wanted to read it now.

She kept telling, “mom, did you know that you can do this…..”, and. “mom you should not be using this to clean, you should try this.”

She also informed me that our light bulbs needed cleaned/dusted. I am not sure I am glad that Heather let her know that I have been slacking on that one, but now that she knows all about cleaning them, she is free to do it anytime she wants. 🙂

What I love about this book is that it keeps your attention. This is not a simple how to book with tons of details. Heather makes it fun, while teaching you. She keeps it real, but is very informative.

And any book on cooking and cleaning that grabs a 13 year old, has to be good.

One of the things that really I liked about this book was how it was set up. There are four sections and each section deals with a different subject.

Section one is Clean it and is all about cleaning.

Section 2 is Wash it and is full of laundry and garment repair tips.

Section three is called fix it. If you need some basic around the house handyman type tips, this section is great.

The last section is all about cooking and cooking basics from recipes and techniques to pantry and meal planning.

Although much of the information in this book is information I already know, most of it was new to my daughter. So, I think this book would be great for those needing to learn the basics of house keeping.

It would be a good book to give a teen or someone college age that is starting out on their own. This would also make a really good gift for someone getting married. Or if you are needing some new inspiration to tackle those cleaning jobs you have been putting off, this book may give you the inspiration you need.

The  Home-Ec 101 book was just recently released and is now available in both a book and a kindle version.

Now, not only was I sent a book to review, I have two books to giveaway to my readers.

And if this book got the attention of your 13 YO – I can only hope what it might do for a houseful of BOYS ages 9 – 5 & 4. If it can only begin to HELP with them cleaning up I am all sold on it. And since I am recovering from one surgery with another on the horizon ~ this would be a GREAT BOOK to read to get them started in their new habits! 🙂

    Hi! Wow would this ever be the BEST gift for my sister who will be getting married this year! She is clueless in the housekeeping/cooking department!
    Although she tries. 🙂 We live across the street from one another and she keeps running over with questions or in need of help when trying new things! I think it’s cute but she needs to start getting some confidence and I think this book would give it to her! Btw I love your site and have u on fb you rock girl!!!!!

    Hi,
    This would be awesome for our family. My 8 yr. old is loving helping in the kitchen. However, right now I am 7 1/2 months pregnant and on partial bed rest. I’m not allowed to cook, clean, or do laundry. I’m trying to teach her as I sit in my chair and it’s been a little difficult. Some things are just too difficult for an 8 yr. old. Maybe this book will have some tips to help both of us teach her what to do! :0)

    This book is just what every child, whether son or daughter, needs to begin to learn the basics of learning their way around the kitchen! I would love to have a copy of it to give to my granddaughter. I am so grateful that my high school offered Home Ec class. These days, young people don’t get the basic education they need to “survive” in the kitchen. Such a book helps to teach them these skills. I know some grown men and women who could benefit from it as well! Thanks so much for sharing this valuable and useful information. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your website very much and gain much useful information from it.

    I have really appreciated the family and consumer science classes at my kids school- Once they had to LEARN how to do laundry in 6th grade- ahh calgon take me away! I was disappointed in 7th grade when the had foods- cookies and puppy chow are definitely not survival food! 8th grade, however, sealed my faith in home ec when I asked my son what he learned after having the “baby” home for a night and his response was ” I learned I don’t want to have a baby without a wife!”

My sister and I were raised by our single father (certainly not the norm!) so we didn’t grow up beign taught the tricks, shortcuts or how to’s, we learned the basics by trial and error. I would love to get this book so I can teach my boys the right way to do things and learn even more myself!

    I would very much enjoying having a book like this. I just got married in August and am finding more and more that I should have tried to learn more from my grandmom and mom when I was at home! There’s so many things I just don’t know, like the best way to clean a tile floor or how to keep stainless steel pots and pans looking shiny.
