Homemade Favorites, Food Allergies, and Gluten Free

This is one of those posts that I was not sure if I should post here in my main section or in my allergy section, but since homemade food and recreating your favorite food at home is a topic that everyone can enjoy, I decided to share it here in my main section. I also know that most people know of someone that is gluten free, or that deals with food allergies, so this is a subject many of you can relate to.

The picture above is what my kitchen looked like one day last week. Four pans of homemade granola. It was followed by two pans of homemade chocolate granola made by my oldest daughter this weekend. Homemade granola is a favorite breakfast at our house.

When you deal with gluten free eating and nut allergies making things at home becomes a part of life. Those pans of granola will only last us about a week to ten days. Granola is really the only cereal we eat at our house. An occasional box of cereal does make it’s way into the house, but over all we find granola to be an easy and healthy gluten free breakfast and we go through a lot of it.

Last fall marked four years since I began my gluten free journey and February marked four years since my daughter was diagnosed with her peanut, tree nut, sesame allergy. My kitchen today is a totally different kitchen than it was four years ago.

Before going gluten free I often made homemade versions of our favorite foods, but once we started dealing with food issues homemade versions became a must in order to keep my family safe. Recreating our favorite foods at home is something I now enjoy doing. I find that it keeps cooking fun and interesting.

Now don’t get me wrong, there are some great gluten free allergy friendly foods out there. If you are gluten free, but can have tree nuts, Udi’s makes a great gluten free granola. There are great gluten free muffins, doughnuts, cookies, breads, and more.

I love and use those products, but not all things are available on your store shelf in a gluten free version, especially if you are dealing with multiple food issues. Homemade is often the only way to get a favorite food in a gluten free allergy friendly version. And this is true dealing with many food allergies like dairy free or soy free.

When I give advice to someone new to gluten free or the allergy world I always try to tell them a few specific things.

First I try to tell them it will get easier. And this is so true. The longer you are gluten free, and the more familiar you become with it, the easier it gets.

The second thing I tell them is look for naturally gluten free foods. So many things are gluten free like fruits, vegetables, beans, rice, potatoes, and even most chocolate. Focus on those things while you figure out what you can and can’t have.

I tell them to take advantage of the gluten free options now available. Things like gluten free tortillas and gluten free bread. Some things are just easier to buy especially when you first go gluten free.

I also try to tell them to experiment and have fun in the kitchen recreating your favorite foods. So many times those new to gluten free are overwhelmed with cooking and all the changes in their kitchen, but so many things can be made at home.

If your family enjoyed those boxed helper style meals than make a homemade version. They are so easy to make at home and so delicious. If you enjoy pizza you can still enjoy it. Make a gluten free pizza crust or save yourself some time and buy a premade gluten free pizza crust and add your favorite toppings. You can even make some of your favorite restaurant foods at home.

Don’t be afraid to try making things at home. Gluten free cooking can be quick, easy, and delicious.

Dealing with gluten free and other food allergies has definitely made me experiment and try new things in the kitchen. Four years ago I would never have thought that I would enjoy gluten free cooking and baking, but I can easily say it is now something I enjoy.
