I have recently come across several recipes for Indian Style or Indian Spiced burgers served on Pitas with a yogurt sauce. We enjoy something similar with Greek seasoning, so Indian Style sounded interesting to me. We currently have quite a few cucumbers in our garden so I decided to give it a try. I mainly used a Martha Stewart recipe but I changed it up a little because I did not have all of the spices that her recipe called for. The recipes I have seen also call for ground chicken or ground turkey. I used ground pork and ground beef because it is what I had. It was good but I think chicken or turkey would be more authentic.
I have made pitas several times lately and have been meaning to post how I make them. However, when I made them last week only two puffed up and pocketed. They still tasted good but I think I need to perfect it before I list post how I make them.
Here is my version that we really enjoy. I apologize for the picture of the hand. It was the only one that turned out.
Indian Burger with Cumin Cucumber Sauce
- 2 ground meat (chicken, turkey, beef, pork, or combo)
- 4 green onions thinly sliced
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon ground red pepper (depends on how spicy you like it)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- pepper
Mix all ingredients together until well combined. Form in small patties. About the size that will fit into a pita bread. Grill or fry until done. Serve in pita bread with Cumin Yogurt Sauce. We also eat these with lettuce but I do not think that is very authentic, but we enjoy it that way.
Cumin Cucumber Yogurt Sauce
- 1 cucumber, peeled, cored, and chopped
- 1 cup plain yogurt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- salt to taste
Combine ingredients and serve on Indian Spiced Burgers in Pita Bread.
