Oven Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

When I discovered oven grilled cheese sandwiches it kind of changed my life.

Okay, so life changing might be a bit exaggerated, but it was one of those, wow, why did I not try this before type moments.

It was kind of like discovering oven pancakes. They totally changed breakfast in our house and oven grilled cheese sandwiches has totally changed grilled cheese in our house.

I love grilled cheese sandwiches. That probably has something to do with the fact that I love cheese. Grilled cheese sandwiches are pure comfort food to me and I could eat them almost everyday. I don’t, but I could.

We love grilled cheese and tomato sandwiches in the summer with fresh from the garden tomatoes and I even eat bacon, egg, and cheese grilled cheese sandwiches. Really I don’t think I have ever had a grilled cheese sandwich that I did not like.

At some point several years ago I read a tip about making grilled cheese sandwiches for a crowd in the oven. At first I just thought that is a nice tip, if I ever need to make 50 grilled cheese sandwiches, but when will that ever happen.

Then it hit me, wait this would make any grilled cheese sandwich easier to make. I could put them in the oven and walk away to do something else, no more watching the pan or griddle on top of the stove.

So, I gave it a try and loved it. My husband actually thinks grilled cheese in the oven turns out better because the cheese melts more evenly, and I think I have to agree with him. The cheese melts perfectly in the oven.

This is so simple and works well with just about any type of grilled cheese. I have changed the cheese up, and added other fillings to it, and it still works great.

I also love this for dealing with the gluten free eaters and the non gluten free eaters. I can make the gluten free grilled cheese sandwiches on one cookie sheet and then make the regular grilled cheese sandwiches and place them on another cookie sheet. It makes cross contamination less likely to happen and it keeps everyone in the family happy with the type of bread that they can have.

  1. Thanks Lynn! We all love grilled cheese sandwiches, but just like you said with pancakes, I hate having to be stationed at the stove making pancakes and sandwiches for 8 people! :) I will try this this week when I make chili!

  2. Do you know how well this method works with gluten-free bread, like Udi’s?

    • Works great. And I actually love it because I do one sheet for gf bread and one sheet for regular bread. It makes it much easier to do them both when I can just do them in the oven.

  3. I read a similar tip (probably on Pinterest), but it’s even easier as you don’t have to flip the sandwiches! You Preheat 2 cookie sheets and put one on top of the grilled cheeses! That way they are being toasted from both sides! :-) I haven’t tried it but just thought you might want to!

  4. I lived on these one summer. My family was away at their holiday home, I was around 18 and had to stay back at home because I’d started full time work. Every night I’d come home and have one for my dinner. It became a bit of a standing joke in the office. In fact it’s 8.16am Saturday morning here in NZ, the girls are at Grandma’s, hubbys at work so guess what I am now going to make … thanks :)

  5. So funny to me as my mom always made grilled cheese this way. I didn’t have a skillet grilled cheese until I was in my early 20′s! My mom loved grilled ham and cheese this way. Also, works great with pita bread just wrap in foil if you don’t want too crisp.

  6. Our family loves grilled cheese! This recipe is a dream come true. Tasty and EASY! Thanks so much. Found you on Organizing Junkie’s website.

    • Welcome, I am glad you found my site. I hope you enjoy my recipes and tips. And I hope you enjoy these. It really makes cooking them easier.

  7. Thank you! What a great idea!!

  8. Did it! Made the most perfect (and beautiful) grilled cheese I’ve ever done. Even did in the toaster oven, 4 sandwiches. Thank you!!

I was thinking of next time trying melted butter, dipping in one side of bottom bread, placing on pan, putting cheese on, dipping one side of the top bread, laying in place. Then sticking the pan in the fridge until later. Might be even quicker than spreading the butter on each one?? Don’t know what would happen with the butter soaking up as far as even baking.

    • I am glad it worked for you and you enjoyed it! I am not sure on making them ahead. I would say try it and see. If the butter soaks in too much you could always just add a little more butter and cook them so you would not waste them. I am guessing since they would be in the fridge, it would not soak in too much though. I hope that helps!

  9. I too believe that this recipe will be life altering for me!! We like to make are grilled cheese sandwiches with some mustard spread on the inside of the slices and sometimes a slice of tomato.

I plan to serve my like this http://tideandthyme.com/tomato-soup-with-grilled-cheese-croutons/ with Progresso tomato soup. You should post this on foodgawker.com

    Thanks a lot!!

  10. I just wanted to tell you–we do this ALL OF THE TIME now. :) It is just so much easier!!

    • I am glad you like them. I had a crazy day and we are having them for dinner tonight. I love how easy they are. Thanks for letting me know how much you enjoyed them.

  11. Recently subbed in a high school lunchroom, and the sandwiches were prepared like this. Just tried it at home, and I think it’s safe to say I’m converted. To make it even easier, I did what they did at the school- melt butter in a bowl. Spread some all over the cookie sheet, put the bread on, cheese on, top with bread- then just dab the melted butter on top of the bread with a little brush. Saves time buttering all that bread. I always wind up making about 20 when we have grilled cheese, so this is awesome!

I made these last night for dinner and it changed my life. It’s the perfect grilled cheese.

Love this technique (anything that allows me to walk away from the stove is a good thing in my book) – went to use it today only to find NO BREAD! No problem – used tortilla and used the same technique to make some lovely Quesidilla that were far more sucessful than my previous attempts in the stove top!

    • I love oven quesadillas and took pictures a few weeks ago to share them. I am glad it worked so well for you and I hope you enjoy the oven grilled cheese when you get bread.

  14. Just made these with egg ham and sausage very good will def make them again. Great way to get my husband to eat bread lol he had to get all his teeth removed at a young age and cant stand eating bread with dentures. Which is a bummer considering most affordable lunches consist or bread but he was happy to eat this :D
