Ask The Readers {Berries}

I love all kinds of berries. Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, boysenberries, marionberries, I don’t think I have tried a berry that I did not like.

I think berries are my favorite thing about summer. Right now we are enjoying fresh from the garden blueberries. I can’t say the same thing about my blackberries, I do not think they will survive the wild weather we have had the last year in Oklahoma.

Berries take quite a bit of work to grow, especially in places like Oklahoma, but they are so worth it. There is nothing like a berry fresh from the garden or field.

If I had to choose my favorite berry it would be strawberries if I was eating them fresh. If I had to choose my favorite berry for jam it would be raspberry, and if I had to choose my favorite berry to cook with it would be blueberry. How is that for choosing a favorite. 🙂

Now I would love to hear what your favorite kind of berry is and what your favorite way to eat it is? Do you like it fresh, in a pie, in jam, or some other way?

    I love strawberries in jam, blueberries and strawberries in smoothies (frozen), and blueberries plain or baked in about anything! Not a huge fan of berry pie, and the black and rasp berries get me with the seeds, but with a seed strainer they also make GREAT syrup for pancakes or waffles, or a seedless jam!

    Ever had a gooseberry? They are SOUR and my grandmother used to make a pie from the ones she picked in Arkansas.

      @DL Harmon, Well, maybe I need to edit the post to say there is one berry I do not like. Gooseberry. 🙂 We had a gooseberry bush growing up and my mom used to make gooseberry pie. I will eat it, but it really is not my favorite berry, unless it is covered in sugar. 🙂

    I love all kinds of berries, but I think my favorite are raspberries. I like them plain. I actually like to eat frozen raspberries too as a cold treat.

    I love most all berries…but blackberries are the best of all!! As a kid we had so many vines in our California backyard, that Granny and my Mom made pies like mad…while they were in season, we had pies for breakfast, lunch and dinner!! Yep, true story!! YUMMY!!

    I love raspberries in jam and fresh. We grow our own and make our own jam. Strawberries are second and blueberries are third. I love putting all 3 in smoothies. Yum!

    During a recent stay with my daughter in France she had an abundance of Loganberries and we made Jam. I can only seem to grow strawerries here by the sea in Portugal; they are sweet and delicious. I grow these in large pots and crates…in fact any container I can get hold of!

      @PiP, I am not sure I have had a loganberry before, but an abundance of any kind of berry is a good thing. 🙂 I would love to be able to grow strawberries, but they have never done well for me here in Oklahoma. There is nothing quite like a strawberry fresh from the vine.

        @Lynn,
        Hi Lynn,
        Perhaps, you should try growing them in large containers so you have more control over location and soil. It worked for me 🙂

    Huckleberries! I miss them so much not that I don’t live up north where they grow best. Huckleberry jam, syrup, milkshakes you name it I love it. But since I can’t find it all that often my second best is black berry or mixed berry jam and I can eat blueberries all day if you let me.

    There’s no way I could pick a favorite berry – I love them all! My family goes to a local u-pick farm each year and picks pounds and pounds of strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries. Then we fill our deep freeze with them to use all year in smoothies. pies, muffins, salads, and just to eat! Our favorite is probably berry lemonade. So delicious on a hot summer’s day!

    I love fresh raspberries and strawberries. This year my raspberries have grown like crazy and we are eating them every day, plus making jam with them. Up until recently, raspberry was my favorite jam, but then I made blueberry jam and I have to say I have a new favorite berry for jam 🙂

    My favorite are strawberries and raspberries, but I also love marionberries! Marionberry pie is the only pie I like. Unfortunately it’s a Northwest thing. However I recently found frozen marionberries at Costco on the East Coast and was SO excited! 🙂

      @Vanessa, Yes, marionberries are a NW thing. I am always glad when I am visiting during the summer and can catch them in season. I have never seen them in the stores here in OK, so I am glad that you found them at Costco.
