Homemade Fruit and Vegetable Wash

I recently received an email asking me about tips and ideas for making a homemade fruit and vegetable wash. I don’t really have one, but since you all are full of great tips and ideas, I thought it would make a great Ask The Readers question.

So, can you help?

I was wondering if you had a ‘homemade’ fruit/veggie wash in your ‘bag of tricks’? I purchased “FIT” from the store and love the idea of
really really washing vegetables and fruit.

I can’t wait to see what you all have to say?

If you have a question that you would like to submit for my Ask The Readers feature please email me your question.

We use vinegar and water, but I’ve heard Shaklee’s all-purpose cleaner works too.

I mix a little dish soap with warm water in a bowl and swish my berries in it. Then, I am sure to rinse them really well before eating.

Combine 3/4 cup white vinegar, 1 cup water, 2 tbl baking soda, and a few drops grapefruit seed extract. Soak fruit for a few minutes, then rinse with clear water. You should take care when adding the baking soda as it may foam up a bit when it mixes with the vinegar.

I keep a bottle of vinegar and water beside my sink. I use it to spritz down fruits and veggies, sanitize my cutting boards after washing spritz down my sinks, dish pans and cleaning cloths to sanitize and keep ants at bay, and as my general cleaners.
I keep one in the shower to spritz it down after use and a bottle of fun strength vinegar to spritz my cloths once in dryer as my fabric softener.
We love vinegar in this house..lol

You can use ECONUTS which are natural soapnuts. Soak nuts in hot water to release the saponins & then wash fruits & veggies. It would be best to buy ORGANIC so you know the pesticides are not IN your fruits & veggies! ESPECIALLY berries which have no protective outer skin!!

Keeping the Kingdom First has one with baking soda, water, lemon juice and vinegar.

3 parts water to 1 part vinegar. In a spray bottle or bowl. Rinse with running water. Cooks Illustrated did a test and that cleaned something like 98% of bacteria.

I use peroxide. Just spray on your fruits and veggies then rise off. Sometimes I use vinegar as well.
