Instant Pot Rice (Perfect Rice Every Time)

Instant Pot Rice

It is no secret that I love my Instant Pot. I use it all the time for eggs, refried beans, soup, mashed potatoes, and more. Lately I have been loving it for making rice.

I have a rice cooker that I love. It is a Zojirushi rice cooker that I have had for several years and it makes the best rice ever. I love it. I gave my parents one for a gift several years ago and they love it too.

However, the rice takes awhile to cook. Even white rice takes a about an hour in it. Yes, it is great rice, but if I forget to start it in time, dinner ends up being late.

The last few months, life has been crazy, and I have forgotten to start the rice several times. Those times are when my Instant Pot was the perfect solution for cooking rice.

Instant Pot Rice

The Instant Pot works great for cooking rice because it is so quick and easy. It is ready in around twenty minutes depending on the amount of rice you are cooking. It is quick and easy to make and turns out perfect every time.

I have only tried regular long grain white rice in it. I have not tried brown rice in it because my husband doesn’t like brown rice. Yes, I know it is healthier, but he really doesn’t like it, so I stick to regular long grain white rice most of the time. I am sure though the Instant Pot works just as well for brown rice.

I would love to hear your thoughts on cooking rice in the Instant Pot. Have you tried it?

  1. I was so glad to see this, Lynn. I have a really nice rice cooker too and I am trying to perfect rice in the instant pot. I have been using a 1:2 rice/water ratio. My instant pot’s rice setting is for 22 minutes and other places recommend cooking rice for 4 minutes. My rice always turns out the same either way so I’d rather have it done in 4 minutes. Do you know how long your rice setting is for and can you change it at all?
    Thanks so much!

    • Hi! I got the 1:1 ratio for white rice from the post on the Instant Pot site about cooking rice, so I haven’t tried the 1:2 ratio. I tried using just manual times and could not get it right. 4 minutes did not seem long enough and the rice was slightly firm. The 20 minutes mentioned in my post would be the whole cook time, coming to pressure, cooking, and setting 10 minutes to release pressure. So if I am cooking just 1 cup of rice, I think it would compare to about 6-7 minutes actually cook time and that is what I would set the manual for if I used that setting. Does that make sense and help?

      • Thanks Lynn! That helps a lot! I am not sure where I got the 22 minutes. When I just looked it was a 12 minute cook time. I am so excited to try this! I also don’t usually rinse my rice since it’s already such a high water ratio. I will try it exactly as your post states. It sure looks great in the picture! Thanks again!

  2. Cook perfect quinoa too. Perfect every time!
Brown rice is the 1:1.25 ratio
    Thank you Lynn!

  3. Does your rice stick a lot to the sides? I typically cook jasmine rice and I’ve found I need to cook about 1/2 cup extra in the IP since so much of it will stick. I even bought a 3-qt IP recently (to replace my dying rice cooker) specifically to cook rice in most of the time. I’ve also bought the non-stick pot for the 3-qt and found that rice sticks a lot to that too. I never had that problem with my rice cooker. 🙁

Just curious if it’s me or if you have any suggestions. Thanks.

    • I have not had that problem with it, but I haven’t tried jasmine rice in it. Does it do it with regular rice as well? I think jasmine might be a stickier starchier rice than regular long grain, so that might be why.
