Freezing Buttermilk

by Lynn

I use buttermilk quite often in pancakes, biscuits, and cornbread. I do not always use up a whole carton though before it goes bad. I have learned that buttermilk freezes very well. I place it in containers and place on the door of my freezer. The containers I use hold one cup. I like that size because most recipes call for 1 or 2 cups. I can just take the containers out that I need and let it defrost on the counter. I then have it ready to use in a recipe. This is a great way to use up the last little bit of buttermilk that might otherwise go bad. It also means I have buttermilk on hand to use in recipes even when I do not have any fresh buttermilk in the refrigerator.

I don’t buy buttermilk but when I have milk that sours I don’t throw it I’ll use it. But I don’t use right away. Do you think sour milk freezes well?

I think sour milk should freeze fine. I have frozen milk and it works. I don’t like the milk plain after freezing, it does change it but for baking and cooking it works great. I have also frozen cream and it works. I have not tried to whip it after it is frozen but it also works well in recipes like custards that would call for cream. I would give it a try. Freeze a small amount of sour milk and see how it is.

Great tip! I love buttermilk, to drink and to use in recipes.

I usually use a powder buttermilk mix because of this same problem. But since I’ve been on such a freezing kick recently, I should try this!

You can also buy buttermilk powder, it comes in a can and can be found in most grocery stores next to the canned milk. You just add water or milk and you have instant buttermilk.

I have used the buttermilk powder before. I just prefer to use the fresh most of the time.
